A local chevy dealer had a single cab short bed Silverado sitting nice and low on some Z28 wheels with some fat tires. I was in love.

When I was seling cars at aChysler dealership we had a red Tradesmen single cab short box, the only options on it were a 5.7, and a limited slip 3.73 rear end. It was hot.

ok... tell me your secret... why did you drop rear lower than front?

Wouldn’t you want the front lower than rear? Load in the bed means your rear would get lower... plus when you’re not loaded, and you brake, most braking occurs on front anyway...

I am so confused why

Aesthetics. And if you never load the bed, you probably don’t worry about it. Your braking point is valid but a proper kit doesn’t change your braking dynamics.

If I only loaded the truck once a year, I’d level it like this.

I suppose that’s one of many ways of looking at it...

Last I priced out some pickups, once I added steering wheel and lug nuts, it added up to 45K or worse.

Plus with a truck you get higher center of gravity and MPG sucks when you’re DDing it.

I hate to say it, but it’s style over function. Lowering the rear more than the front makes the front and rear wheel gaps look similar. Yes, the rear will sag more under load, but let’s be honest, who uses lowered trucks for work?

At any rate, you can get pneumatic helper bags that will keep the rear from sagging lower under load, so you can still run that sweet, sweet static drop.

Kinja'd!!! BigBlock440 > PartyPooper2012
06/16/2016 at 09:43

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s why they’re lowered....

And they wouldn’t be any worse than a V8 car, especially a lowered short bed with an 8-speed. In truck form they’re in the low 20s, drop it a bit and and you could easily see another 2-3 mpg. Single cab short beds aren’t that heavy either, 4,500+ lbs, or between a Charger Hellcat and a Bentley. It’s not something I’d buy, but I can see the appeal, especially when Chrysler was running the “Free Hemi upgrade” deals a few years ago. Spec it with a 3.92 and limited slip, it’d be decently quick.

Kinja'd!!!0

I’m not saying you’re wrong. It just doesn’t compute for me.

Spend money to lower truck... then spend more money to make it loadable truck... all to make front and rear wheel gaps look similar.

Don’t you get that same look by just loading some boulders in the bed? Free boulders from side of the road plus extra grippy because weight.

Side effect - rattling

Kinja'd!!!0

Again, I am not saying you’re wrong. I was always under impression that the object of the game is to get a vehicle for the job. If you want to go fast, get a sports car. If you want to haul shit, get a truck.

I understand what you’re saying and not arguing your points. just saying this is all news to me

Kinja'd!!! BigBlock440 > PartyPooper2012

Kinja'd!!!0

Throw a hard cover on the bed, and you’ve got yourself a 400 hp, V8, RWD 2-seater sports car with an oversized trunk. It’ll run a 14 second 1/4 mile stock. Since there’s been a big lack of affordable V8 RWD cars, the smallest, lightest versions have become the go-to (though it seems like it’s mostly Dodges, don’t see many Fords or Chevys). It’s completely useless for most things people buy a truck for, but much better at other things. If you stop thinking of it as a truck it makes more sense.

Kinja'd!!! and 100 more > PartyPooper2012
06/16/2016 at 10:02

Kinja'd!!!0

I mean, let’s be honest here, there is no practical reason to lower a truck. It’s for looks. And it’s totally subjective; lowered trucks really rub some people the wrong way.

But you can say the same for lowered cars; unless you’re racing on the weekends, there’s no practical reason to lower them. It’s just for looks.

So while lowering the truck to make the wheel gaps similar doesn’t strike you as a good enough reason to lower a truck, in all honesty, it doesn’t really have to - it’s an aesthetic you just don’t get, and that’s okay.

That being said, just throwing extra weight in the back to achieve the desired wheel gap will make it handle like you threw extra weight in the back (go figure). A properly lowered truck will ride/handle close to how the factory intended, perhaps a bit better by virtue of the fact that you’re using aftermarket components. And for what it’s worth, if you do it right, you’re only spending money on/installing a suspension kit once, since you’ll seek out the one that already incorporates all the necessary components.

Kinja'd!!!0

I disagree. I don’t like lowered trucks and would never do it myself, but there are practical reasons to lower it, I can think of 2. The first and biggest is fuel economy, you could probably net an easy 2-3 extra mph highway with a lowered truck. The 2nd is for a lower bed height, if you’re not going to be loading it to max weight. Also, adding weight to the bed usually makes trucks ride nicer, and the bumps smoother. Overloaded and it’ll feel squirrely, but if it’s still under the rating, a bit of weight on the rear axle makes a noticeable improvement in ride quality.

Truth is, most people use trucks as commuter cars, grocery getters, and baby haulers, that can move a couch once in a blue moon, on the very rare occasion that you you need to move a couch. But the interiors are increasingly like a living room on wheels, and they offer that false sense of security and superiority on the road, plus it bangs that “Murica! Fuck yeah!” button everytime you get in and turn the key and hear all eight cylinders burning gas at an alarming rate, all so you can do the same mundane things you’d normally do even if you didn’t have a truck, because you really don’t need a truck to begin with.

/end Ridgeline argument

If we only bought trucks for trucking things, you’d see maybe a tenth of them that you see today. And they would all have ladder racks and contractor phone numbers.

But we are not a nation of “need”, and Victoria McSoccermom will damn well take her pickup truck (with four full doors) to go get Starbucks before she picks up the kids from summer daycamp. And she will put $60 in the tank tonight before she needs to drop the kids off tomorrow, because 12-15 MPG isn’t going to get her far.

Kinja'd!!!0

First off, for the record, let me say: I love lowered pickups . Something about it just looks so contrary to their purpose, and yet so incredibly right at the same time...

That being said, for the 2-3 mpg you gain by lowering a pickup, you could easily gain 10 mpg by switching to a different type of vehicle. About the only exception to this that I can think of off-hand, would be a cross-country car hauler, where your mileage is your work, and lowering the truck wouldn’t necessarily affect it’s ability to do work. Plus, if you’re lowering it primarily for looks, then adding extra weight in the bed just to level it out will negatively affect your mpgs.

On the topic of lowered bed height, you have a great point that I didn’t consider. A lowered pickup is far easier to load from the ground. But so is a cargo van.

But what’s the reason they make pickups with a higher rear end in the first place? Why is it that they ride better with a small load over the axle? Because they were designed to haul stuff on a regular basis. They were designed for work . The ass-end of a pickup is the business-end.

The discussion here is that lowering a pickup is really more a matter of aesthetics than anything else. Are there positive side-effects? Sure, but they’re small at best.

Yes, you could gain more by switching to a different type of vehicle, but then you’d be driving a different type of vehicle.

then adding extra weight in the bed just to level it out will negatively affect your mpgs.

Also not true. pickuptrucks.com runs yearly test and comparison tests, and often the fuel economy portion shows that loaded mpg is higher than unloaded.

As for a van being easier to load, no, you can’t reach over the bedside of the van, you can only load from one side or the rear. A truck you can load from 270 degrees. There are many people complaining that trucks are too tall and bedsides too high these days, lower than factory alleviates those complaints.

You say it’s purely for aesthetics, and most of the time it is, but you can’t say that’s the only reason to do it. I know a guy that lowered his 2" solely for fuel economy. Different people have different priorities and needs.

Also, I disagree with your ladder rack comment, lots of jobs for pickups would be a pain in the ass with a ladder rack.
